SHORT HISTORY OF THE JSHM

1892 Upon the suggestion of FUJIKAWA Yū and colleagues and in furtherance of the distinguished achievements of their predecessors, the SHIRITSU SHOSHIN IKAI (Private Society for the Promotion of Medicine) was proposed for the purposes of encouraging development of the Japanese academic medical community. On March 4 of this year SUGITA Genpaku and others proposed a commemoration day for the first dissection performed at Kotsukahara and a meeting, known as the SENTETSU TSUISENKAI (meeting for the promotion of ancient teachings), was held at Konohanaen in Negishi, Tokyo. Thereafter, a general meeting was held each year concurrently with the commemoration day. An official journal titled SHOSHIN IDAN was published. Later, however, in order to introduce the latest findings in domestic and foreign medicine and to further the spirit of the medical field it was incorporated into the journal CHUGAI ISHI SHINPO, which was founded in 1880 by HARADA Sadakichi and colleagues, and this became the official publication of the society. Publication of this journal reached 1,286 issues.
1915 The SHIRITSU SHOSHIN IKAI (Private Society for the Promotion of Medicine) was reorganized. It was proposed to set up a separate organization to focus on medical history and call it the SHOSHIN IKAI (Society for the Promotion of Medicine), while other activities were to be conducted by the NIHON ISHI KYOKAI (Japan Association of Medical Doctors). The official journal of the Society was the CHUGAI ISHI SHINPO and its publication continued as before.
1927 On November 14 the SHOSHIN IKAI (Society for the Promotion of Medicine) was reorganized and was renamed the JAPANESE SOCIETY FOR MEDICAL HISTORY. From issue 1117 (Nov. 15, 1926) the official journal of the Society CHUGAI IJI SHINPO became a journal specializing in the field of medical history.
1928 In March the Articles of Association for the Society were drawn up and the first chairman of the board of trustees, KURE Shūzō, was appointed.
1932 In March, upon the death of KURE Shūzō, IRISAWA Tatsukichi became chairman of the board of trustees.
1934 In April, at the general meeting of the NIHON ISHIGAKKAI (Japan Medical Association), the JAPANESE SOCIETY FOR MEDICAL HISTORY was designated as its first associate society.
1938 Upon the death of IRISAWA Tatsukichi, FUJIKAWA Yū was appointed as the third chairman of the board of trustees.
1941 In January, Fujinami Gōichi was appointed as the fourth chairman of the board of trustees. With the publication of Issue 1287, the journal CHUGAI IJI SHINPO was renamed NIHON ISHIGAKU ZASSHI, the JOURNAL OF THE JAPANESE SOCIETY FOR MEDICAL HISTORY.
1942 In December, upon the death of FUJINAMI Gōichi, YAMAZAKI Tasuku was appointed as the fifth chairman of the board of trustees.
1945 In January, the printing facilities of the journal were destroyed by fire during the war and publication of the JOURNAL OF THE JAPANESE SOCIETY FOR MEDICAL HISTORY was suspended with issue 1334.
1948 With the end of the war, the temporarily suspended activities of the Society were resumed and in March the 55th general meeting was held.
1949 In January, at the suggestion of NAKANO Misao and colleagues, the KYORIN ONKOKAI, which had been established in 1938, was recognized as a chapter of the Society. It was named the KANSAI CHAPTER OF THE JAPANESE SOCIETY FOR MEDICAL HISTORY and NAKANO Misao was appointed as chapter president.
1952 In December, the Kansai Chapter resumed publication of ITAN as its official publication. Former publication had run from the first issue in 1938 to the 17th issue in June 1944.
1953 In July, upon the resignation of YAMAZAKI Tasuku, UCHIYAMA Kōichi was appointed as chairman of the board of trustees. The Articles of Association were revised and plans were made to resume the publication of the Society's official journal.
1954 In March, the numbering system of the official publication was changed. The number of volumes was set at one volume per year and Volume 1 was established retroactively as dating from 1941, the year when the name of the official journal was changed to the JOURNAL OF THE JAPANESE SOCIETY FOR MEDICAL HISTORY. With resumption of publication, the first issue (Issue 1335 according to the old system) became Volume 5, Issue 1.
1954 On March 28 the name of the general meeting, formerly known as the SENTETSU TSUISENKAI (meeting for the promotion of ancient teachings), was changed to "general meeting". The 56th general meeting was held and it was agreed that the general meeting would be held once each year. In September the 14th International Conference on Medical History was held in Rome and OGAWA Teizō, member of the board of trustees, took part as the first official representative of the Society.
1958 At the 60th general meeting a commemorative collection of classical works of medicine was issued.
